Information

KOMMZ is a music festival that has been held annually since 1975 in Nilkheimer Park near Aschaffenburg. The name is derived from “Kommunikationsfest” (communication festival) and the invitation “Kommts alle” (come one, come all). It is one of the largest and oldest non-profit festivals in Germany. In addition to the three-day music program, the festival offers theater, cabaret, an extensive children's program, and free courses.

After the Social Democrat Willi Reiland was elected mayor of Aschaffenburg in 1970, the city's municipal youth center was established, which was to be self-managed by young people. The first park festival (July 12–13) was planned there in 1975. Inspired by the coup in Chile in 1973, the Chile Committee designed the cultural and political content. The city youth welfare office financed part of the event and made Nilkheimer Park available in compliance with legal requirements. The KOMMZ group emerged from this park festival, initially supervised by the youth welfare department of the city youth welfare office.

The KOMMZ continued under municipal sponsorship in 1976 and 1977. However, following political disputes, the city closed the municipal youth center in the spring of 1978, withdrew funding from the KOMMZ group, and refused to allow the festival to continue—despite preparations already underway and contracts already signed. Nevertheless, a small group of dedicated individuals managed to organize the fourth KOMMZ as the first free and independent festival, despite strict requirements imposed by the public order office and police.

The focus of KOMMZ has always been on communication and togetherness rather than consumerism. Commercial providers are excluded. The only concessions are made in the cultural program in the form of a high-quality music program and a children's program that has since become exemplary. A large part of the revenue generated by volunteers goes to social institutions and aid organizations.
