Nilkheimer Park
daily, 10:00 am – 6:00 pm
Nilkheimer Park stretches picturesquely between the Main River and Schönbusch Park. Originally laid out as an orchard with farm buildings, the Elector of Mainz, Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal, had the grounds converted into a model agricultural estate in the classical style. Later, the wealthy merchant Carl Constantin von Mergenbaum shaped the stately life on the estate; even King Ludwig I of Bavaria was among his guests. Especially for the king, who preferred to arrive by boat, an open staircase once led from the central Hall of Mirrors directly down to the banks of the Main River.
Today, the landscape park invites visitors to linger with historical monuments such as the Monopteros, a statue of Hermes and a sphinx made of shell limestone. The ruins of the Stockstadt fort baths and the stone lions of the former Siegfried monument are special testimonies to history. While the Nilkheimer Hof now houses the municipal parks department, the Hall of Mirrors serves as a romantic backdrop for civil weddings during the summer months.
