Festival for Design and Democracy

What does design have to do with democracy? At see – a two-day festival comprising the see-Conference and see-Camp – creative professionals from the fields of design, visual arts, architecture, performing arts and film will demonstrate how our participation in society is shaped by design. And this will take place in 2026, when the Frankfurt Rhine-Main region will hold the title of World Design Capital under the motto ‘Design for Democracy’.

The festival kicks off with the see-Conference on 25 April 2026 at the Schlachthof in Wiesbaden, which is now in its 20th year of inviting international creatives from all fields to Wiesbaden and has thus become one of the most important interdisciplinary design conferences in Germany. Confirmed speakers for this year include, for example, architect Jette Cathrin Hopp from the renowned Oslo-based architectural firm Snøhetta, the unconventional design studio Holy Motors from Georgia, and the Hungarian artist David Szauder. The highly acclaimed philosopher Eva von Redecker will open the conference with her keynote address.

Following Saturday’s inspiring talks, the see-Camp on 26 April 2026 will take a more practical approach: speakers from the see-Conference, dedicated experts and local initiatives will guide participants in working towards a democratic and sustainable way of living together. Across various topics (e.g. design, public space or health), the aim is to creatively shape living spaces together – with concrete initiatives that remain visible and tangible in Wiesbaden and the region long after the event day. In practical terms, this means, for example: discussing and implementing, designing and printing, gardening and fermenting, experiencing and learning. Around 900 visitors are expected at see this year, which will also feature an interactive exhibition and a get-together afterwards – as well as the break programme popular with long-standing see guests: a diverse culinary offering and friendly exchanges with many inspiring people. In the spirit of inclusivity, ticket prices have been reduced thanks to our sponsors.

The event is sponsored by, amongst others, the Hessian Ministry of Economics, Energy, Transport, Housing and Rural Affairs, the Gemeinnütziger Kulturfonds Frankfurt RheinMain GmbH, the State Capital of Wiesbaden – Department of Economics and Employment, and Scholz & Volkmer GmbH.
