Information

The garden's roots reach back to 1763, when the city physician Johann Christian Senckenberg founded its predecessor at the Eschenheimer Tower for the training of medical students. After several relocations, the current site on Riedberg is Frankfurt's fourth botanical garden. It was opened in 2014 to mark the 100th anniversary of Goethe University and has since served the natural science departments for research and teaching.

Unique Flora Under Glass

The architecturally striking greenhouse in the northeast covers 1,400 m² and houses around 1,500 tropical and subtropical plant species as well as experimental cultures. Particularly noteworthy are:

• Historical finds: Plants such as the rare Microcycas calocoma from Cuba, which was collected as early as the 1950s.

• Unique worldwide: The specialized collection of tropical Marcgraviaceae. Diversity in the open air: The currently four-hectare open-air area (seven hectares planned) focuses on temperate and sub-Mediterranean species.

Key areas include:

• Research projects: Such as the "Forest of the Future" or the medicinal plant section.

• Thematic areas: Systematic section, tall oatgrass meadow, dry slope, and orchard.

• Education: The "School in the Science Garden" particularly strengthens teacher training.

Note: The potted plant section is open seasonally from April to October.
