At the time of the reformation or under the Catholic Electorate of Mainz, educational institutions are also used to spread the faith and to influence the population. The Enlightenment period was particularly influential in the Duchy of Nassau. In the Idstein seminary, teachers were to be "made skilful in passing on a necessary general education for the progression to a higher stage of the development of the citizens" (§1 of the school edict of 1817). The state of Nassau saw the development of the school system as one of its most important tasks (compulsory education from ages 6 to 14). Confessional antagonisms were to be eliminated in the state schools (Simultanschule). During the time of the Weimar Republic, this became a law. Similarly important are the intellectual and methodological stimuli provided by reform pedagogy since 1900. In the museum, the seduction of pupils by National Socialism is presented with its political and human consequences.
