Information

Birstein Castle was built in its original form in the 13th century; it was first mentioned in 1279. There were major expansion phases in the 16th century, more precisely in the years 1525-1620, and in the 18th century, here in particular 1764 to 1768 the baroque extension was built, which still dominates the entire complex today: the New Palace.

Both expansion phases are likely to be related to family historical events: in 1517, Birstein Castle became the residence of the Counts of Isenburg, and in 1744 the counts were elevated to the status of imperial prince.

There is a lot to see in the Princely House of Isenburg. Starting with the baroque splendor of the castle and its outbuildings, which are still the residence of the Princes of Isenburg today. Inside you can admire the historic rooms, equipped with mostly original furniture. On the southeast side of the castle, the inner courtyard with its beautiful landscape architecture has always been an inviting place to linger. Just follow in the footsteps of famous personalities such as the young Goethe, Tsar Nicholas II or Pope Pius XII.
