Information

Picturesquely situated between the Spessart and Odenwald forests on the Bavarian Lower Main, Miltenberg looks back on a glorious history. Once one of the wealthiest towns in the Archbishopric of Mainz, magnificent half-timbered houses on the famous "Schnatterloch" market square bear witness to the wealth of bygone eras.

The Museum Stadt Miltenberg is housed in three of these historic 16th-century buildings. But the true gem lies hidden behind the walls: A stair tower in the inner courtyard leads to the bourgeois Renaissance garden, which nestles gently against the hillside.

Even in the 15th century, this place served not for the arduous task of self-sufficiency, but for representation and the leisure of the nobility – archaeological finds prove that the inhabitants preferred to obtain their food fresh from the Frankfurt market. Today, thanks to the dedication of volunteers, the garden shines in renewed splendor. Geometric boxwood hedges, historic roses, typical Renaissance herbs, and sculptures create an oasis of tranquility. Those who sit on the small bench here can enjoy not only the scents of centuries past but also a breathtaking view over the rooftops of Miltenberg.
