The museum, a former schoolhouse located between the castle tower and the church, presents its extensive collection of mainly historical instruments. Based on Praetorius' "Syntagma Musicum", the showcases were equipped with families of instruments. Etchings allow historical comparisons and insights into the stages of development of individual instruments. Cassettes or CDs are available as acoustic supplements, as well as instruments that can be tried out at a music table. A collection of wind instruments from all over the world complements the European section: old Inca flutes, Irish bagpipes, an African snakeskin flute or the Tibetan human bone flute. A collection of miniatures reflects the musical spectrum from porcelain figurines of Höchster Manufaktur to the Chinese Bleistiftspitzer-Musikgruppe. The world's largest collection of hurdy-gurdies and bagpipes comes from the Frankfurt "instrument maker and collector" Kurt Reichmann.
