Museum der Gemeinde Großkrotzenburg
63538 Großkrotzenburg
The house of the museum is located in the middle of a former Roman fort from the 2nd century AD, of which remains of a corner tower and parts of a five-meter high enclosing wall can still be seen. The tower and wall are the oldest above-ground Roman structures on this side of the Rhine. The Großkrotzenburg Museum is housed in a listed neo-classical building dating back to 1894. From the cellar to the attic, the museum documents contemporary history from prehistoric times to our times. A model of the Roman fort complex as well as numerous finds, are illustrated. Among other things, the replica of a Mithras sanctuary, originals and replicas of votive stones, remains of the Roman bridge over the Main River, maps, models, dioramas, armor, weapons, iron tools, ceramics, glassware, a usable flour mill, and original hypocaust tiles from the Upper Germanic Army Brickyard, which was located in our community for more than 100 years, can be seen.
