Information

With the regional museum "Limes im Hofgut", we have set up a small but fine museum. The Georgenthal estate is located directly on the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Limes". With texts, maps, pictures, finds and interior design, we whisk vistors away to a piece of world history from antiquity, right on our doorstep. 2,000 years ago, the Mediterranean world ended for us. We present Roman metal finds from the Alteburg castle near Heftrich: a bronze jug, a lamp and an iron bell tell stories of everyday life on the Limes. The equipment of the Roman soldiers included protective shields with shield bosses on the outside. The fragment of such a shield boss is one of the finds from the Alteburg, as is a picture dish from Terra Sigillata on which such a shield can be seen in combat. The ancient potter Belsus immortalized himself with his own stamp on the bowl, he worked between 170 and 220 AD in the ceramics factory of Rheinzabern am Rhein.
