Lichtigfeld-Museum / Synagoge
Lichtigfeld Museum is located in the Michelstadt synagogue from 1791, where Rabbi Seckel Löb Wormser, the Baal Shem of Michelstadt, worked from 1822 to 1847. The Michelstadt synagogue is one of the very few Jewish houses of worship that survived in southern Hesse after the Nazi persecution of the Jews. In the post-war years, the synagogue was renovated and the Jewish Museum was established in its rooms. It bears the name of the state rabbi Dr. I. E. Lichtigfeld, who presided over the Jewish communities of the state of Hesse from 1954 to 1967. On display are cult objects, archival materials and photo reproductions commemorating the Jewish citizens. The collection provides an insight into the religious, social and political conditions of the Odenwald Jews in past centuries. In 2005, the regional rabbi Dr. Salomon Almekias-Siegl donated a Torah scroll. Since then, the Jewish community of Michelstadt has started holding services in the synagogue again.
