Leibniz-Zentrum für Archäologie (LEIZA)
As a Leibniz Research Institute and Museum of Archaeology, LEIZA studies the material legacies from 2.6 million years of human history. The aim is to use archaeological finds and findings to demonstrate and understand human behaviour and actions, human activity and thinking, and the development and change of societies. As one of eight research museums of the Leibniz Association, LEIZA combines excellent science with diverse formats of knowledge transfer. Its museums are both experiential spaces and places for dialogue with society. It offers rooms for science, laboratories, a library and, from 2024, a new exhibition. Founded in Mainz in 1852 as the Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum (RGZM), the internationally active research institute has been operating under the new name Leibniz-Zentrum für Archäologie (LEIZA) since 1 January 2023.
