65343 Eltville am Rhein
At 24 meters high, the castle tower is the landmark of the city of Eltville am Rhein that can be seen from afar. The castle tower tour starts on the ground floor. The Count's Chamber on the first floor impresses with its historic wall paintings from the 14th century. In 1465, Johannes Gutenberg received the only honor in this room during his lifetime – he was appointed court man. One floor up, the Gutenberg exhibition is reminiscent of the inventor of modern letterpress printing. The Castle Association holds printing days on the historic Florentine printing press several times a year. The canons' chamber on the third floor with its vaulted ceiling houses documents on the city's history, the so-called "Alta Villa Collection". A view from the viewing platform over Eltville, the Rhine and the Rhine-Main region compensates for the many steps. At the end of the tour, do not miss the dungeon under the tower, which can be reached via a narrow spiral staircase.
