Information

The museum is housed in a three-sided courtyard building, which was built in 1892 by the master bricklayer and mayor Johann Sittig (term of office: 1892 to 1919). The museum, which opened in 1986, is housed in the former stables.

History and everyday life in Kriftel are presented in several rooms. The first room is dedicated to the time of the Romans and the Middle Ages. Kriftel was first mentioned in writing around 790. A model clearly shows the extent of the municipality around 1820 and agricultural and craft equipment is also on display.

Economic and social history topics can be found in the following room. Among other things, the emigration movement in the 19th century, the development of the Beyerbach paint factory and the start of fruit growing at the beginning of the 20th century are presented.

The fifth room contains objects on the subject of ‘Church and Religiousness’. One focus is on the memory of the missionary Boniface, whose body, according to tradition, was kept in Kriftel for one night when he was transferred from Mainz to Fulda in 754. The oldest sculpture dates back to the 15th century.
