On the site of the former US camp Point Alpha, which gave the whole area its name, the barracks of the soldiers and the observation tower are still in existence. The exhibitions there offer an insight into the threatening situation at the so-called Fulda Gap and show the everyday life of the US soldiers which were stationed there and the German civilian population in the area until the departure of the US Army. On the route between the US camp and the “House on the border”, originally preserved border fortifications from the 1970s and 1980s bear witness to the inhumanity of the division of Germany. In addition to these original parts, reconstructed border installations from earlier decades complete the outside display of the cruel GDR border regime.
Additional exhibitions in the “House on the border” show the situation on site during the Cold War, when the city of Geisa was the westernmost point of the Warsaw Pact. Information about the Rhön Biosphere Reserve with the Green Belt complete the exhibitions.
