Fasanerie
open daily
The Fasanerie, which is directly adjacent to Schöntal and Großmutterwiese, is an important example of electoral garden design. Created in 1779 under Archbishop Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal according to plans by Emanuel d'Herigoyen, the area originally served as a game park and a stately supply source for the palace kitchen. With the redesign of the Nilkheimer Wäldchen into Schönbusch Park, the Fasanerie took over its function as a hunting ground, enhanced by landscape features such as fish ponds and pheasant enclosures.
After a period of reforestation in the 19th century, the park underwent extensive revitalisation starting in 1968. With the participation of the US Army, the central Fasanerie lake was restored and the historic network of paths repaired. Today, the 50-hectare site is a sprawling landscape park with cascades and winding paths. The forest is particularly enchanting in spring when the wood anemones are in bloom. With its popular restaurant in the former hunting lodge and modern multi-generational playground, the Fasanerie now offers recreation for all ages.
