Information

Frankfurt am Main has been the capital of satire since the founding of the satirical magazines Pardon and Titanic. The Caricatura Museum Frankfurt - Museum of Comic Art continues this claim. With more than 7,000 originals by the draughtsmen of the "New Frankfurt School" and around 5,000 drawings by other caricaturists, it presumably has the highest humour content in the museum landscape.

On the ground floor, the Caricatura Museum Frankfurt shows changing exhibitions of renowned representatives of comic art: international artists such as Jean-Marc Reiser, Tomi Ungerer and Kamagurka were presented; there were solo exhibitions of representatives of the NFS; a show was dedicated to the masters of comic painting Sowa, Hurzlmeier and Kahl; and with Marie Marcks and Franziska Becker, two of Germany's most successful female caricaturists were shown. Absolute crowd pullers were the anniversary shows of the satirical magazine Titanic in 2009 and most recently in 2019, the exhibition of the Austrian artist Gerhard Haderer in 2011 and in 2018 with a new record number of visitors "OTTO. The Exhibition".

On the first floor of the Caricatura Museum, the permanent exhibition with the works of the five draughtsmen of the New Frankfurt School: F.W. Bernstein, Robert Gernhardt, Chlodwig Poth, Hans Traxler and F.K. Waechter each have a cabinet dedicated to them. The hanging of the permanent exhibition is changed twice a year for conservation reasons and to show as many drawings from the collection as possible.

So much for the interior. The bronze elk, created by Hans Traxler, greets visitors in front of the building. He is the mascot of the Caricatura Museum Frankfurt. The motif is taken from the famous two-liner by F.W. Bernstein: "The sharpest critics of moose / used to be some themselves".
