Information

As Offenbach expanded beyond its historical boundaries in the 19th century, a new, ten-hectare cemetery was established in the east of the city in 1832. It replaced the cemetery at what is now Wilhelmsplatz, which had to be relocated due to increasingly dense development for hygienic reasons.

What is special about this cemetery: From the very beginning, a burial ground for the Jewish community was integrated into the eastern section. As with the Christian section, gravestones and remains from the old 18th-century cemetery were transferred here as well and respectfully incorporated into the new design.

Architecturally, the cemetery differs significantly from the landscape parks that were common at the time. Designed as a strictly geometric layout, the right-angled paths form a checkerboard pattern, the central axis of which is symbolically aligned with the city. Behind the protective cemetery wall, a botanical oasis has also developed: With rare trees and a rich flora, the area offers a biodiversity that is unique in the modern cityscape. The magnificent tombs are far more than mere stonemasonry – they are silent keepers of fates and witnesses to Offenbach's social development over two centuries.
