Information

Framed between the metropolitan areas of Rhein-Main in the north and Rhein-Neckar in the south, barely 30 km from the metropolis of Frankfurt, lies a piece of floodplain that is second to none in Europa: the nature reserve Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue. With around 2400 ha floodplain, it is not only the largest nature reserve in Hesse, but also one of the largest, genuine floodplain nature reserves in Germany. The Kühkopf Knoblochsaue nature reserve is a real gem on the northern Upper Rhine. In the heart of the area is the Guntershausen estate. It forms the entrance to the nature reserve and European reserve and is also the western entrance gate to the Unesco-Geo-Naturpark Bergstraße-Odenwald. Excursions and guided hikes start from here. The north wing of the listed building complex houses the environmental education center "Schatzinsel Kühkopf" with the permanent exhibitions "In the middle of the river", "History in the river" and "World in the river" – an exemplary project in the sense of "Education for sustainable development ".
