The Territorial Museum in Babenhausen, designed as a narrative gallery, provides an overview of the former county of Hanau-Lichtenberg and the social and industrial development of the Babenhausen region in the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt, using modern media.
The museum marks the beginning of the Darmstadt-Dieburg district's plastics industry, with exhibits from the former Cellba doll factory, among others.
A lapidarium in the courtyard with old gravestones of the lower nobility as well as historical legal and traffic signs illustrates the actions of the state.
The history of the castle, the county of Hanau-Lichtenberg, the town charter, and the Reformation are presented, while the 19th and 20th centuries are illustrated with the Hölzerlips gang, industrialization, and the military in the region. In addition, personalities from the past 250 years are introduced, and contemporary witnesses recount their lives in the project “Memories of a Town.”
Regular special exhibitions complement the permanent exhibition.
