The glittering center of Fulda's imposing Baroque quarter is the city palace, the former residence of the Fulda prince abbots and prince bishops. The baroque palace was extended between 1708 and 1714 as a four-wing complex with two side wings enclosing a cour d'honneur. Today, most of the castle serves as the seat of the city administration. Some parts have been reconstructed as Historical Rooms. They offer a glimpse into the life of absolutism. Visitors can see the baroque banqueting hall and its magnificent adjoining rooms, the Fürstensaal. The centerpiece of the tour is the residential wing of the Fulda prince abbots and prince bishops of the 18th century. The princely apartment was furnished around 1730 and remodeled in the 1750s in the Rococo style. Magnificent frames and mirrors, precious wallpaper and paintings transport the guest to the heyday of absolutist regency. The exquisite collection of the Historic Rooms also includes selected faiences and porcelains from the Fulda manufactories, which, however, only produced high-quality pieces for a short time. In addition, lavishly restored state rooms from the 19th century can be marveled at, which bear witness to the reign of the House of Hesse in Fulda in the style of late classicism.
