Founded in 1897, the museum has been located in the Minnigerode House (1687) and the Neurath House (1688) since the renovation of the old town in 1975. The first floor, where the forged guild shields of Alsfeld crafts are on display, is dominated by the baroque spiral staircase, dating to the construction period, worked from a single oak trunk. In addition to the town history collection with prehistoric and early historic finds, the Schwälmer and Katzenberger traditional costumes, the craftsmen's hall and furniture, the regional museum also shows extraordinary exhibits, such as the Torah shrine, which was saved from the burned down synagogue on November 1oth, 1938; the 12 m long "Alsfelder Tapete" from the year 1814, the 1848/1849 vest of the president of the German National Assembly, the so-called "Sword of Charlemagne" and the late Gothic missal from the Alsfeld Augustinian monastery from 1501.
