Information

For over 450 years, the springs have shaped the history and culture of the Kronthal valley. Economic growth began in 1818 when Dr. Ferdinand Küster, the district physician, discovered the healing properties of the water and established the spa. Just 15 years later, the Frankfurt merchant Johann Adam Osterrieth built a grand spa hotel complete with a pond – on the site where the boules court now stands on the former terrace. Together with his sister, Osterrieth designed the spa park as a spacious English landscape garden, which soon became a favorite subject of the Kronberg artists' colony.

Despite its early heyday and the export of its mineral water as far as America, the Kronthal valley was unable to compete with regional rivals in the long run. While the spa operations ceased at the end of the 19th century, the mineral spring remained in operation until 2005. Thanks to a comprehensive renovation by the Rhine-Main Regional Park, the park has been shining in new splendor since the beginning of the 21st century: Historical vistas were restored, streams uncovered, and the network of paths reconstructed according to the original design. Today, the idyllic park grounds, with its Kneipp water-treading basin, boules court, and historic healing springs, once again invite visitors to linger.
