Prinz-Emil-Garten
daily opened
The Prince Emil Garden was created from 1772 onwards as an English pleasure garden for the Minister of State, Karl Friedrich von Moser. It owes its current name to Prince Emil of Hesse-Darmstadt, who acquired the grounds in 1830. The centerpiece of the park, the late Baroque palace, was built between 1775 and 1778 by Johann Martin Schuhknecht.
Once, numerous follies, such as a Chinese pavilion, an artificial church ruin, and antique statues, adorned the garden, but these were lost over the course of history. The unobstructed view from the palace terrace across the Rhine plain has also been obscured by modern urban development. The park has been owned by the city of Darmstadt since 1927. Following extensive renovations in 1986, the historic pond was among the features restored. Today, an impressive variety of old tree species characterizes this green oasis, while the palace serves as a center for civic gatherings.
