Naturschutzzentrum Bergstraße
64625 Bensheim
The Nature Conservation Center Bergstraße is a facility for environmental education and experience on the Hessian Bergstraße. The nature conservation center with its outdoor area is located on the shore of the Erlache near Bensheim, on the edge of a depression, which was created by the prehistoric Altneckar. In the neighborhood, there is a gravel pit in which the sediments of the former river system are mined. The renatured part of the gravel pit and the adjacent Altneckararm are a nature reserve and EU bird protection area. In the outdoor area, there are adventure areas such as herbal spirals, a fireplace, a geological wall with rocks from the crystalline Odenwald, a frog pond for independent research, a vegetable garden, several bee colonies, a drywall, summit stones etc. The two environmental-pedagogic pillars of the Center are on the one hand lectures, excursions and exhibitions for those who are particularly interested, and on the other hand immediate nature experience for children and families, as introducing people to nature early on and inspiring them is one of the basic ideas of the institution.
