In 2017, the last remaining tobacco shed on Lorsch territory was opened as a museum of tobacco cultivation and thus complements the presentation of the tobacco museum in the city center in terms of content. The wooden building is a listed building and is located about ten minutes' walk to the east, near the little river Weschnitz, in the area of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. A more authentic place like the 50 m long, 8 m wide and 13 m high wooden building could probably not be found for this purpose.In the immediate vicinity of a tobacco field that has been cultivated again (since 2013), the equipment and tools that the tobacco planters needed can be found here - directly in the sandy soil. 16 exhibition units on two floors are dedicated to the growth and care of the tobacco plant from the sowing of the swollen seed to the fermentation of the dried leaves. Here, too, it is visible that the tobacco farmers and tobacco growers were always trying to optimize the conditions as well as their tools and machines. The oldest objects in the collection are from 1880, the youngest from 2006. On the second floor, the Lorsch Tobacco Project has hung tobacco to dry, so that guests can ideally see the green or even flowering plant, up to three meters high, in the field and the harvest brought in the year before in the shed. The intact construction of the post-and-beam building, whose outer skin consists of movable boards (so-called slats), also shows the ingenious construction method, which can be controlled by hand, to ensure optimal drying of the leaves. In addition to the agricultural equipment, there are many photos and multimedia stations in the shed. Bild- und Tondokumente, darunter etliche kurze Filmsequenzen, machen zusätzlich das landwirtschaftliche Leben und seinen Wandel rund um den Tabakanbau deutlich. Aus Witterungsgründen ist der Tabakschuppen nur von Ostern/Mitte März bis Ende Oktober geöffnet. The museum is accessible only with guided tours.
