Information

Visitors to the section on the town’s history will find numerous artefacts relating to its various periods within the museum. Whilst the town is the museum’s sponsoring body, the Art and Cultural History Society is responsible for its management and acts as its board of trustees. In addition to exhibition spaces spread over several floors, the historic fire station of the voluntary fire brigade has also been incorporated into the museum’s layout. Collaboration with private collectors and museums expands the existing collection, which is organised into the following sections:

- Ice Age fauna and flora

- Prehistory and early history

- Town and church history

- Historical and contemporary inland waterway transport

- The life and work of Peter Schöffer and Joseph Schmitt

- Hunting and fishing

- Historical Fire Brigade

- East German Local History Room

Thematic lectures and special exhibitions regularly complement the existing programme. These may take the form of travelling exhibitions or art displays.
