Since October 2022, the Muschelkino has been an integral part of Mainz’s cinema and cultural scene, attracting several thousand visitors each year, and in 2025 it became the first university cinema ever to be awarded the Rhineland-Palatinate Cinema Programme Prize! Every Tuesday during term time, it opens the doors to Lecture Theatre N2 at the ‘Muschel’ on the campus of Johannes Gutenberg University and presents a wide-ranging programme of free films for anyone interested. Seat cushions and a selection of chilled drinks are provided to create a cosy cinema atmosphere.
All films are shown in their original language with German subtitles (where possible) — everyone is welcome and admission is always free!
