Around the year 800, Charlemagne had a palace built in what is now the district of Nieder-Ingelheim. Its imposing ruins can be visited in the Kaiserpfalz Archaeological Zone. The Kaiserpfalz Research Center is responsible for researching and preserving this unique early medieval monument. In 1993, work began on gradually uncovering, conserving, and opening to the public the remains of the palace buildings, which had been buried over the centuries and had almost disappeared under modern buildings. Today, the Imperial Palace is one of the best-preserved early medieval palaces in Europe. Preserving it for future generations is therefore one of the most important tasks of the Kaiserpfalz Research Center. Accompanying exhibitions are intended to arouse interest in this era, which still holds many secrets. Based on research findings, digital educational offerings such as virtual 360° tours and digital reconstructions of the Imperial Palace are also available, providing an increasingly vivid picture of what Ingelheim might have looked like around 1200 years ago.
