Information

‘The park is magnificent,’ enthused Fyodor Dostoyevsky in 1867 – even though he lost all his money at roulette shortly afterwards. In fact, it was gambling that financed Homburg's rapid rise to become a world-famous spa resort after 1840. To expand the grounds, none other than the ‘star’ of garden architecture was hired: Prussian garden director Peter Joseph Lenné.

Based on Lenné's vision, the heart of the park was created starting in 1854. Light-flooded meadows, winding paths and wide sightlines still characterise the park today. Under renowned successors such as the Siesmayer brothers, the area grew to 47 hectares. With over 2,100 trees from all over the world, the spa gardens are now one of the most important monuments of garden art in Germany.

A walk along the chestnut-lined Brunnenallee is like a trip around the world:

• Orient & Asia: Two golden ‘Thai salas’ commemorate the spa stay of the King of Siam in 1907.

• Russia: The magnificent Russian church bears witness to the former importance of guests from the East.

• England: Golf courses and tennis courts testify to the influence of British spa guests who brought their sports with them to the spa town.

Since 2013, a detailed park maintenance plan has ensured the preservation and careful development of this historical gem.
