Information

Großherzoglich-Hessische Porzellansammlung was founded by the grand duke Ernst Ludwig of Hesse. Despite numerous new acquisitions, the collection has retained its character of a family inventory, which is shaped by the preferences of the individual family members and the relationships with other European noble houses, to this day. One focus of the collection is the faience and porcelain from the Kelsterbach manufactories, which were supported by the landgraves of Hessen-Darmstadt. Höchst, Frankenthal, Meißen, Nymphenburg, Sèvres, Vienna and St. Petersburg represent other important manufacturers. The collection provides an overview of the artistic development of European ceramics from the beginnings to the end of the 19th century with over 4000 objects made from faience, earthenware and porcelain.
