No other medium has shaped the 20th century, captured it as comprehensively and authentically as the film. But none was ever so threatened by loss: maiming, destruction and decomposition of the material have already damaged a large part of the film heritage. The Murnau Foundation has set itself the task of preserving, restoring and reconstructing this cultural film heritage and making it accessible to the public.
Since April 2009, the Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau Foundation has been operating the Murnau Film Theatre as a public cinema, with numerous events and exhibitions taking place in the multi-functional area.
