Information

The SteinReich is a permanent exhibition on the subject of geology in the Rhön, designed by the Tann cultural and historical association. It shows fossils and rocks from the estate of the Tanner collector Fritz Schmidl. The focus of his extensive collection is on fossils from the shell limestone period, a phase of the Triassic about 240 million years ago. They bear witness to the fact that the Rhön was once covered by water. In addition to numerous subspecies of ceratites (a specific genus of ammonites), remains of other sea creatures such as mussels, sea lilies and nethosaurs can be seen. A special feature of the exhibition are the newer fossils from the Tertiary (beginning of approx. 35 million years), which come from the geologically interesting lignite deposits near Theobaldshof.
