Information

Consecrated at the beginning of the 19th century on the northern edge of the then-settlement, Geisenheim's first municipal cemetery marked a turning point in the town's burial culture. The clear, geometric network of paths replaced the haphazard churchyard burials and took into account the emerging hygiene regulations.

Today, after burials ceased in 2005 and the site was transformed into a public park, this historic place invites quiet contemplation. Numerous listed gravestones and mature trees lend the site a unique, dignified atmosphere. The monuments reflect a fascinating cross-section of Geisenheim's civic society over the centuries.

Particular highlights include the restored mortuary chapel, the impressive mausoleum of the von Lade family, and the striking thuja avenue they donated, dating from the 1860s.
