Information

The Heimatmuseum Ockenheim (Ockenheim Local History Museum) offers far more than just a traditional insight into the town’s history – it makes the everyday world of the 19th and 20th centuries ‘tangible’ in the truest sense of the word. In the fully furnished flats dating from around 1900 and the 1950s, visitors are actively encouraged to explore, as they are allowed to open cupboards and drawers themselves. Whilst adults and children squeeze into the wooden school desks in the historic classroom and write on slate boards with styluses, the laundry room and the tools of the tailor, hairdresser, cobbler, carpenter and midwife breathe new life into old trades. The region’s agricultural traditions and wine-growing are also vividly illustrated by historical equipment in the courtyard area.

With its latest extensions, the museum invites visitors on an even deeper journey through time. A new clothing and needlework room showcases the fine textile artistry of days gone by, whilst next door, in the children’s playroom, a 100-year-old tin railway runs nostalgically round and round. The exhibition ‘Technology for Work and Entertainment Through the Ages’ illustrates just how rapidly our everyday lives have changed. The experience is rounded off by fascinating insights a history of lighting under the theme "Alte Lampen in neuem Licht – ausgeknipst? Keineswegs!“ combined with a touch of humour and nostalgia: the exhibition on the wanderlust of the 1950s and 1960s, subtitled  „Leberwurstbrote am Strand von Rimini“, brings back memories of the early days of tourism during the German Economic Miracle. A lively destination for the whole family that brings generations together.
