Heimatmuseum Obbornhofen
35410 Hungen
May to October or with appointment
The Obbornhofen Local History Society (Heimatverein Obbornhofen e.V.) uses an almost complete farmstead to showcase rural life in days gone by, featuring various trades once practised in the village, such as shoemakers, butchers, farriers, wheelwrights and so on. The working, living and housing conditions are presented here in a realistic manner.
The museum preserves living quarters in their original form, including a kitchen, a ‘parlour’ and an original bedroom, where children are even allowed to try out the ‘comfort’ of a straw mattress.
The original town hall – the oldest half-timbered town hall in the district of Gießen, dating from the 16th century, where civil weddings can once again be held today – is used for the special exhibitions held regularly, which usually remain open throughout the entire museum season.
