Staatspark Hanau-Wilhelmsbad
In 1764, hereditary prince Wilhelm of Hesse-Kassel took over the government of the county of Hanau. In the suburb of Wilhelmsbad, he initiated the construction of a bathhouse in 1777. Within a very short time, the spa flourished, so that by 1785 the hereditary prince had further guest and social houses built, such as the Kavalierbau, the Arkadenbau and the Komödienhaus. The buildings, lined up along an axis, the Promenade, are embedded in extensive gardens modeled on English landscape gardens. They included the famous carousel and a playground with swings and a bowling alley. Opened daily, the landscape park still invites visitors to stroll around to this day. hereditary prince Wilhelm had a castle built as an artificial ruin on an island in the park, to which he retired for privacy. The interior decorations are in the style of early classicism. The castle is in line of sight with the arcade building and the Philippsruhe residential palace. It can be visited on the weekends.
