Behind the large entrance gate, visitors enter the outer castle with the former farm buildings, todays restaurant Burg Ronneburg and a falconry. To the right is the core castle, the former residential castle and today's museum, its access was secured by three gates: the so-called Philippstor at the entrance to the former drawbridge, the gate at the well house with its 96 meters deep well and a treadwheel as well as the former guard room opposite, the upper gate with a long gateway for additional protection of the upper residential castle. In the upper castle courtyard, the mighty keep with its "Welsche Haube" crowned by four oriels towers over the castle courtyard. Opposite from it lies the mighty Palas. To the north are the high walls of the bower building with its Renaissance oriels from the 16th century. The courtyard is closed off by the Zinzendorf Building above the upper gateway and a high defensive wall to the south. A tour of the castle's interiors starts at the courtyard.
