Information

The monastery, founded around 800, is the heart of the town. The abbot Petrus Lotichius (1501 - 1567) founded a grammar school here after the Reformation, todays Ulrich-von-Hutten Gymnasium. As a painter and engraver Ludwig Emil Grimm left his mark in the Schlüchtern collection, such as drawings and watercolors. Love letters from the Biedermeier period and a bride's trousseau are as much represented as the Muche collection. Felix Muche called himself "Ramholz" after his place of residence. The synagogue, built in 1898, is a testimony to the once very large Jewish community. The Wolf family made soaps from Schlüchtern a trademark. In 1920, the Neuwerk movement formed around Georg Flemmig. The Lebensreformer founded Habertshof, Sannerz and Sparhof near Schlüchtern.
