Around 1959, oil was drilled and extracted in the middle of “Schloßbuckel”. After a short time, the drilling was stopped again. The concrete foundation of the oil hole with the production pipe can still be seen in the castle complex today. During the drilling, inexplicable remains of a wallwere found, but not given much attention. From 1970 to 1972 the Darmstadt State Monument Office undertook scientific excavations on the “Schloßbuckel”. The project was financed by the power plant operator RWE, who was building the nearby nuclear power plant at the time. The excavations revealed the remains of a historical system spanning four eras, the Roman period, the Carolingian period, the Middle Ages and modern times. The outer bailey of the medieval "Veste Stein" on the Rhine has not yet been explored.
